Many home owners have tried a variety of DIY home repair jobs, some of which may have ended up being disasters at worst or simply left unfinished due to unexpected complications. Now UK homeowners can benefit from some expert advice on DIY repairs thanks to a new series called DIY SOS.

This 13 part series from BBC Lifestyle will air at 7:30 pm, and it offers practical advice on a variety of common home repair problems. If you've got what it takes, there's always the possibility of making it work for you! In this economy, it's good to really take inventory of all your skills and see where they might take you in the job market. A great example of this is a neighbor of mine, who has always had impressive skills in the area of do-it-yourself home improvement. Granted he worked in construction earlier in his career, but he definitely kept up his skills even when no longer in the sector. A while back he undertook a major renovation project on his house. He was almost ready to start with the upstairs, the flooring being the only thing left for the downstairs. Despite his considerable skill in this area, he wanted to just get it done fast so he could save some energy for starting the upstairs project. He had Empire Today take care of it and when they were doing the installation, he half joked about how after he finished working on his house he'd be ready to join their business! Turns out, that wasn't so far-fetched! The installers told him to look into Empire Today Careers and sure enough it looks like he can move forward with that as soon as he's ready. So, you see, don't discount any skills you have that could get you to land a place in the job market. Keep alert for scouting out possibilities and you could turn those skills into employment opportunities!

Fire alarms are an important part of safety of oneself, one's family as well as property. The value of the alarms came to light yet again in the recently rated 'world's best city to live in' i.e. Melbourne.
A house in the Australian city was up in flames when the alarms that the smoke and heat triggered off sounded. The alarms were the difference between what could have been a major accident at the abode. Three people escaped from their burning home in Melbourne's bayside suburb of Sandringham after smoke alarms woke them up. On hearing the alarms and the commotion, fire fighters were called at the site of the one-storey building at around 11:45 in the night.
An elderly couple and one more member of the same family escaped the premises without injury, since they had been woken up in a timely fashion by the fire alarms. The cause of the blaze is yet unknown.
